Washoe Little League Softball Divisions
Ages 4 through 12

Washoe Little League offers four different softball divisions for the kids in South Reno. Our "Lower Division" includes Teeball for children 4-6 years old and Coach Pitch for children 6-8. "Upper Division" includes Junior Player Pitch for children 8-12 and Majors for children 9-12.

TEEBALL

League Ages 4 -6

This is our traditional teeball division. For teeball, the girls will be in a combined league with the same aged boys. They will have the choice to be placed on an all girls, or coed team. Prior to playing at the next level, kids need a year of teeball to develop their skills. The experience is grounded in fun, fitness, and fundamentals while also being a key to growing a child’s love for the game.

COACH PITCH

League Ages 6 – 8

Upon successful completion of a season of teeball, kids move into the Coach Pitch Division. This division is for girls only, played on a full-sized field, and with a 10” ball as they transition truly to softball. The goal of this division is still very instructional with focus on learning to hit pitching from their coaches, basic base running, and fielding fundamentals.

PLAYER PITCH

League Ages 8 – 10

At this level, kids will go through a skills evaluation and be drafted by coaches to teams for a fair level of competition. This level is played with an 11” softball. Kids in this division generally have the ability to field ground balls and make stronger throws across the diamond. Kids are exposed to live pitching from other players for the first time. There are strikeouts but no walks. If a batter receives four balls from the opposing player, they will receive pitches from their coach to finish the at bat. This division will introduce more
advanced base running including passed balls and advancing on overthrows. Emphasis in this division is on continued defensive skills, base running, learning to pitch and facing live pitching from other players.

MINORS

League Ages 9 – 11

Kids at this level will tryout and be drafted by coaches to their respective teams. This level is played with an 11” ball. This level continues to advance the kid’s skills and limits the coaches’ involvement in the game. The pitching at this level will be stronger and more consistent. Hitters are expected to be ready to hit pitches from other players instead of their coach. The coaches will still finish at bats upon receiving four balls from the pitcher but only after 3 walks have been issued in the inning. Base running continues to advance with less limitations on passed balls and overthrows. Stealing bases is now allowed. Defense at this level should be able to make routine plays in the infield and plays in the outfield become more regular.

MAJORS

League Ages 10 – 12

Majors is the highest softball division where games are played with the most advanced level of skill and competition. All kids will try out and are drafted by coaches to teams for a balanced competitive experience. All pitching at this level is from players, with no coach assistance. Kids in this division are generally able to routinely make plays in the infield and outfield. Hitters should be comfortable facing more advanced live pitching. There are walks and strikeouts, inning counts, steals, and everything else that makes softball fun. Girls from this division are eligible to be selected as All-Stars and will be eligible to represent Washoe Little League in the Little League Softball World Series Tournament.

POST-SEASON TEAMS

Starting in 2022, Washoe Little League will add a Softball All-Star team to our very successful post-season program. Washoe has accumulated 47 District Championships and 3 State Championships cementing our legacy as the League of Champions and are excited for Softball to join in the mix.
