HomeAbout usWashoe Little League History

Established in October 1959, Washoe Little League is one of the oldest & most successful leagues in the region with a combined 55 District Championships and 3 State Championships since 2000.

1959-1999
RURAL BASEBALL IN WASHOE AND PLEASANT VALLEYS

Washoe Little League was founded in the Spring of 1959 through the efforts of Galen McDade of Steamboat. The original boundary was everything south of Hash Lane, which eventually became South McCarron Blvd. A year later, on May 14, 1960, McDade Field was completed and dedicated. At this moment we are rebuilding the History of Washoe Little League and will update this page as we rediscover the past.

OUR BEGINNIGS

May 25, 1960, Reno, Nevada

McDade Field opens, in honor of Galen McDade of Steamboat, who started the league in the spring of 1959.

THE GRANGE

The park was located at the intersection of Virginia City Highway and Toll Road on land leased from the Grange. Originally a gulley, the site has been filled with some 500 yards of dirt hauled into the grounds by volunteer adults and teenagers.

FIRST GAME AT MCDADE FIELD

The first game was to be played under lights, but the cost of lighting had exceeded original estimates, so the women backers of the Little League program got busy on another fundraising project. A new concession stand was built in plenty of time for the opening. But the unusual heavy winds last weekend ripped the structure and sent it collapsing. So the men are rebuilding it.

FIRST SEASON

The first season had youngsters from Steamboat Springs, Washoe Valley and nearby areas south of Reno played on four Little League teams. Two more teams were added in 1960 to accommodate the number of youngsters wanting to play.

2000-Present
LEAGUE OF CHAMPIONS

Around 2000 the South Valleys Regional Sports Complex opened and with it a new home for Washoe Little League. Since 2000, Washoe Little League has accumulated 55 District Championships and 3 State Championships cementing our legacy as the League of Champions.

2010-NOW
MORE GROWTH,
MORE SUCCESS

With the incredible growth in South Reno, Washoe continued to add players to the fields and trophies to the case.
